The Fidget Space

1714 N. Mascher St., Philadelphia

Relâche audiences know and love our very own reed player Sean Bailey, and his virtuosity– not to mention his versatility– is second to none. But what you may not know about Sean is that his sense of discovery and spirit of curiosity extends well beyond the concert stage, and that this mild-mannered clarinet and sax player lives on the cutting edge of music’s unexplored terrain.

Sure, Sean is a fantastic performer; why else would he be at the top of the wish lists of everyone from the Philadelphia Orchestra to jazz legend Christian McBride to tech giants like Google? From the first note that any of us heard Sean play, we knew that he would elevate our group and bring in his own brand of breezy command of everything we play.

But Sean– who holds a PhD in Music Studies, thank you very much–  is also a formidable thinker and academician who has risen to the very top of his field through his unique blend of inquiry, research, dedication, and adventurous spirit. His research into machine learning and artificial intelligence applications within the context of sound creation was ahead of the curve by at least five years.

His interests and talents have naturally converged in the setting of the recording arts, where he lends his flawless ears to live recording projects, as well as his continuing exploration of the possibilities of human and digital interaction in the studio.

Re | LEASE, an electroacoustic program celebrating Relâche’s roots in improvisation, intermodal creative collaboration, and experimental musical design, will feature Sean’s newly-released work GENERIC, along with the World Premiere of a new work for clarinet, flugelhorn, electronics, and dance, with special guests Lee Salazar (flugelhorn) and Savannah Green (dance).

This performance coincides with and celebrates the audio release of Hover, composed by Erin Busch and featuring Sean on clarinet and electronics.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This venue is on the 5th floor and does not offer elevator access.
